Cross Marketing : Example Case

Promotional Gift - Caps

Lets say we’re working with a sporting goods store that wants to increase its sales. This company wants to find a community event or sporting team to sponsor. We decide to contact the Minor League baseball team in town to see if they would be interested in a cross promotional program. They agree and we set out to find a promotional item to get the word out about the team and the store. The most obvious answer is to create a cap promotional that could be handed out at baseball games.

The cap promotion should be an instant success. We’ll place the team logo on the front, and downplay the company name on the back of the cap. This design gives fans the feeling of wearing an official cap while still allowing the store to have a presence in the crowd. Once a week we’ll advertise a promotion on local radio stations and drop a few links on social sites we are members of letting them know that they will receive a free cap for coming out to support the team.

This campaign will work to fill the seats at the game, and also increase sales at the sporting goods store. As a bonus for sponsorship, the store will gain some instant credibility in its’ local market. This store could even branch out into other promotional events like handing out free mugs, key chains, and calendars featuring the teams’ players. This campaign should help to create a presence as “The” sporting goods leader in the community.

With creative thinking you can discover a number of different occasions to present your customers and clients with promotional gift incentives. Think about what your customers might be enjoying outside of what products or services you currently offer and you will uncover new sources of prospects. Not only will you gain goodwill and retention points from your existing customers by having your brand name show up in an entirely unexpected format and venue but you’ll also get those customers to become your sales team in the new market because they will undoubtedly give you a word of mouth endorsement to the friends in their presence when your brand name is spotted. “Hey, I didn’t know abcwidget company was a sponsor here, I get all of my widgetwons from those guys”. Okay, a little syrupy but you get my point.

Use your imagination and creativity when you consider cross marketing promotions and you’ll discover new demographic sectors from which you can earn additional revenues. That group who never purchased your product are service before might have just needed that little personal testimonial from a trusted friend to help plant your brand name in their mind. And if you’ve chosen a useful promotional gift item with staying power, your brand name will be the first in line when the time comes to make a purchase.
